W&L — A desire to design & build spaces
Over the past four years, I'd embarked on a meandering journey that culminated in the decision to leave a career in software. It was hard to get to that place, but it felt good once I started saying it out loud.
The follow-on question of course was what would come next, and for that, I looked back to my earliest childhood impulse: to be an architect. After some searching, I decided that what the child in me wanted wasn't actually to become a licensed Architect, but to be a designer/builder of physical spaces.
I built a Farm Store for Emma & Wiley and that project thrilled me. I started making furniture, which was like using a feather to scratch an itch, but it was something. I traveled to Vermont to immerse myself in a month-long design/build program and came back completely convinced that this is what I wanted to do even if I was unsure of how to go about it.
All to say, our search for a property took on even greater meaning through this self-discovery: it now represented an opportunity for me to design, build, and learn on a project with full agency.
