Raised beds for Zack & Gabby

This was a fun project to transform our backyard, shared with some good friends, from a concrete slab into a modest garden. I thought it would be nice to design raised beds that doubled as seating; this worked out well!

What I learned:

  • Sometimes the best way to design is to built in place, like adult legos!

  • It's probably worth the trip across town for straighter, dryer, cheaper lumber.

  • Moving soil is no joke! Without a wheel barrow, it took us over four hours to shovel the pile we had delivered out front into the beds. It was set to pour the next day, so we scrambled into the night to bag up the remainder. We're told the beds will settle a few inches over the next few months, at which point we'll top them off with what soil we have left.

  • Building with friends is incredibly fun, especially spaces that you continue to occupy and invest in over time.

Overpriced, soggy redwood boards from the neighborhood building supply store, chopped to whatever length fit in the car.

Every weekend project should begin with a feast!
